Jesus told His disciples that He would send the “promise of
the Father,” which is the Holy Ghost.
"And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you:
but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on
high." - Luke 24:49 KJV
"And, being assembled together with them, commanded
them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of
the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with
water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence."
- Acts 1:4-5 KJV
The outpouring of the Holy Ghost, the “promise of the Father,”
was prophesied by Joel in the Old Testament.
"And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour
out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: and also
upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my
spirit." - Joel 2:28-29 KJV
On the Day of Pentecost, when Jesus poured out His Spirit, Peter
let the people know that the “promise of the Father” had been given.
"But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his
voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at
Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: For these are not
drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is
that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
“And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I
will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters
shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall
dream dreams: and on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those
days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:" - Acts 2:14-18 KJV
After preaching the gospel to them, he told them how they,
too, could receive the Holy Ghost, the “promise of the Father.”
"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye
shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38 KJV
"For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and
to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." -
Acts 2:39 KJV
