If you haven't had your sins washed away by the name of Jesus in water baptism, what better time than the new year to get baptized in Jesus name. A new start in the year, a new start in life!

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38 KJV

A new year. A new calendar to open and start new. An opportunity to purpose in our hearts to live for God more than we have last year…to do more in the kingdom of God – praying more, witnessing more, fulfilling our callings.

It can be a productive time of self-examination. It can be a productive time of making things right. It can be a time of forgiveness. It can be a time of repentance and receiving forgiveness.

"Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 3:12-14 KJV

Another translation:

"I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me [made me his own]. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us." - Philippians 3:12-14 NLT

The Butler and the Baker and Communion

While Joseph was in prison, Pharaoh’s Butler and Baker were also cast into prison. The Butler and the Baker both had dreams. The Butler dreamed he was taking grapes and pressing them into Pharaoh’s cup. Joseph interpreted for him that in three days he would be restored to his position.

The Baker dreamed that birds ate all his bake goods that he had in a basket on top of his head. Joseph interpreted for him that in three days he would hang on a tree and die. (Genesis 40:1-19)

The Butler seems to represent the blood and Spirit of Jesus. The Baker seems to represent the body of Jesus. Jesus’ flesh hung on a tree, died, and was buried. But in three days, His Spirit resurrected Him to life.

“I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” (John 6.51)

"And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, "Take, eat; this is My body."" (Mark 14:22)

"Now it came to pass on the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants; and he lifted up the head of (summoned) the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants. Then he restored the chief butler to his butlership again, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand. But he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them." (Genesis 40:20-22)

As the fulfillment of the dreams take place in three days, Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection also take place in three days.

“Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day” (Luke 24.46)

The Butler, as the cup bearer, seems to represent the Life that is in Jesus.

"Then he (Jesus) took the cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And he said to them, "This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many." (Mark 14.23, 24)

"For the life of the flesh is in the blood…" (Leviticus 17:11a)

After Joseph had interpreted the Butler’s dream, Joseph told him to remember him.

"But remember me when it is well with you, and please show kindness to me; make mention of me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this house (prison)." (Genesis 40:14)

"Then he restored the chief butler to his butlership again, and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.… Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him." (Genesis 40:21, 23)

Just as Joseph told the Butler to remember him, Jesus told his disciples to remember Him when they would take the cup with the fruit of the vine.

"In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”" (1 Corinthians 11:25)

Then the chief butler spoke to Pharaoh, saying: "I remember my faults this day." (Genesis 41:9)

For two years, the Butler had forgotten to tell Pharaoh there was an innocent Hebrew bound in prison. Then, the Butler remembered his faults.

Before we take communion, we are to remember our faults.

“But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup.” (1 Corinthians 11:28)

When we repent, we crucify our flesh, just as the baker was hung on the tree. When we apply Jesus’ blood in water baptism for the remission of sins and receive the Holy Ghost, we are restored to God, as the Butler was restored to his position with Pharaoh. In communion, we examine and judge ourselves, as the Butler remembered his faults. When we remember Christ, He is loosed and elevated in our life to a position of power, salvation, and provision, as the Butler remembered Joseph, who ascended from a place of being bound, to rule all the land of Egypt, providing for and saving the world from famine.

Fire represents God as well as His angels (Acts 7:30, Nehemiah 9:12, Hebrews 1:7)

"For our God is a consuming fire." - Hebrews 12:29 KJV

Fire represents God’s acceptance of a sacrifice. (1Chronicles 21:26, 2Chronicles 7:1, 2Chronicles 7:1, 1Kings 18:22, 24, 38)

"And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." - Acts 2:3-4 KJV

"Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the house." - 2 Chronicles 7:1 KJV

Fire is used to purify the pure and destroy the impure. (Malachi 3:2 KJV/NLT, Zechariah 13:9 KJV/NLT, Matthew 3:10, Luke 3:17, 1Corinthians 3:13, 15, Revelation 3:18 KJV/NLT, Revelation 15:2, 2Thessalonians 1:8, 2Peter 3:7, Jude 1:7, Jude 1:23, Revelation 20:9-10, 14-15)

"I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:" - Matthew 3:11 KJV

"That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:" - 1 Peter 1:7 KJV

"But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold." - Job 23:10 KJV

"For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt." - Mark 9:49 KJV "For everyone will be tested with fire." - Mark 9:49 NLT

"Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:" - 1 Peter 4:12 KJV

"Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him." - James 1:12 KJV

"But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men." - 2 Peter 3:7 KJV

In this life, it is the things that are not seen that count. It is these things that are eternal. (2Corinthians 4:18).

Love is such a thing. It is eternal. Love is the most essential and most important in the scheme of things. (1Corinthians 13:13, Colossians 3:14)

The highest form of love a person can possess, comes only from Jesus. This love comes when the Spirit of Jesus is within a person, when all selfish desires have been extinguished. (Acts 2:37-45, 2Timothy 2:21, 1John 4:13, 16, Galatians 5:16-17, 2Corinthians 7:1)

This love prefers others, and forgives others. There is no boasting, no envy or jealousy. This love is patient and complete giving. (1Corinthians 13:4-7, Romans 12:9-17)

To attain such love, is walking in the Spirit of Jesus. It is having been forgiven much, loving much. (Acts 22:16, Titus 2:11-14, Luke 7:36-50, 1John 4:19, Romans 8:1-11)

Oh, that we may enter this New Year with His love working in and through our life. (1Thessalonians 2:11-12, 1 Timothy 1:5)

The star

"Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him." - Matthew 2:1-2 KJV

Balaam, a gentile prophet, had prophesied of a Star. This Star is Jesus the Messiah.

"I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel…" - Numbers 24:17 KJV

A scepter of a king. (Gesenius' Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon) (i.e. Psalm 45:6)

The wise men from the east came seeking this King.

"When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

“And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

“Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

“When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was." - Matthew 2:3-9 KJV

"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak." - Ephesians 6:10-20 KJV

Rejoice! Glorifying and praising God for He has come to save us!

"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. ...

And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. ...

And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them." - Luke 2:8-12, 16-17, 20 KJV

Myrrh

Jesus is the Savior of the world. Jesus told Nicodemus it is by being born of the water and of the Spirit that the world is saved.

John 3:1-2 ¶There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: the same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

John 3:3,5 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God…Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

The message Jesus gave to Nicodemus that night was the gospel message. Jesus told him He would die so that the world could be saved.

John 3:14-15 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

When Jesus told Nicodemus that the Son of man would be lifted up, Jesus was speaking of the death of His human flesh on the cross.

Later, after Jesus’ death, Nicodemus brought myrrh for Jesus' burial. Myrrh is burned as incense and used in perfume. It was also used for embalming the dead.

John 19:39-40 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

An observation was made about the hundred pound weight of myrrh and aloes that Nicodemus brought to embalm Jesus’ body: "The quantity of the balm is extraordinary and exceeds all normal proportions. This is a royal burial."

Years earlier, when Jesus was born, wise men came seeking he that was born King of the Jews. One of the gifts that the wise men presented to Jesus was myrrh.

Matthew 2:1-2 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

Matthew 2:11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

How fitting the gift of myrrh: Jesus was born King of the Jews, born to die for the sin of the world. Just as the wise men offered Jesus the gift of myrrh at Jesus birth, Nicodemus also offered the gift of myrrh at Jesus death, making sure Jesus had the burial of a King.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

... He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." - John 1:1-4, 10-14 KJV

God revealed the light of His mercy when He made Himself a temple of flesh and blood and dwelt among us. He is the Light. (John 8:12)

"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage." - Hebrews 2:14-15 KJV

"…Who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:" - 2 Timothy 1:10 KJV

The light of Jesus appeared to Saul of Tarsus (that became Paul the apostle). Paul became a preacher of the gospel to the Gentiles.

"Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, to open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me." - Acts 26:17-18 KJV

The gospel brought the Gentiles from the darkness of condemnation to the light of God’s mercy by the forgiveness of their sins by repentance, baptism in Jesus name, and the gift of the Holy Ghost. By God’s mercy, found through the gospel, the Gentiles also became God’s chosen people.

"But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar ["(God's own) possession"] people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy." - 1 Peter 2:9-10 KJV

"For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:" - Ephesians 5:8 KJV

How do we obey the Gospel to become children of light?

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." - Acts 2:38-39 KJV

In the beginning of the nation of Israel, God was their King. After the years of the judges and at the time of Samuel, the last judge, the people decided they wanted a king like the other nations.

Samuel was not happy with this, and went to the LORD.

"And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them." - 1 Samuel 8:7

God told Samuel to warn the people of all the problems they would have if a man was their king instead of God.

"Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; that we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles." - 1 Samuel 8:19-20

As many years went by and kings came and went, none could be a substitute as God for their King.

Then "the fullness of time" arrived.

"But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons." - Galatians 4:4-5

Just a short time after Israel’s covenant of the law with God at Mt. Sinai, there was the first sin of the Jewish people as a nation with the golden calf. Israel needed a Redeemer.

Now, God Himself would pay the price of sin with the shedding of His very own blood. The Lord overshadowed a young virgin causing her to conceive. This baby boy was God in flesh, the Redeemer, not only of Israel, but of the whole world, for all have sinned.

"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." - Matthew 1:21

"Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." - Matthew 1:23

Not only did God come as Redeemer: He came as King.

The wise men from the east came seeking this King,

"Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him." - Matthew 2:2

God would once again be King of the Jews. This time, God would be the King that every eye could see. He would be the Righteous Judge. He would go out before His people, and fight their battles. God, as the Lamb of sacrifice which taketh away the sin of the world, is this King. His name is JESUS.

"These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful." - Revelation 17:14

Shepherds

What does the word shepherd mean? It means, “to feed a flock; to pasture, to tend.” (Gesenius' Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon). “A herdsman.” (Thayer's Greek Lexicon)

The Bible says,

"[A Psalm of David.] The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." - Psalm 23:1 KJV

"Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture." - Psalm 100:3 KJV

In the Old Testament, God called the rulers and teachers of Israel shepherds. (Jeremiah 23:2-4)

In the New Testament, the LORD speaks through His chosen vessels, spiritual shepherds, which are pastors and teachers, leading and guiding His people by anointed preaching and teaching of His Word. (John 21:15-17)

"Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood." - Acts 20:28

When the LORD was born as a baby in Bethlehem, angels announced His birth.

How fitting that shepherds were the first to hear the announcement!

"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

“And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." - Luke 2:8-14 KJV

The shepherds were witnesses of Jesus’ birth – Christ the Lord our Savior, born in Bethlehem, wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. They were witnesses of the angel of the Lord announcing peace between God and man, the skies filling with the heavenly host praising God for the great joy that He would bring as our Savior! The LORD would pay the price for our sins (shedding His blood) so that we could have this peace on earth. (Colossians 1:20)

"And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child." - Luke 2:15-17 KJV

The shepherds then did what spiritual shepherds do today – they told everyone everywhere about Jesus!

"And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds." - Luke 2:18 KJV

Those that heard the shepherds “marveled.” God’s grace is amazing.

"But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart." - Luke 2:19 KJV

But Mary kept these things in her memory, revolving these things in her mind. She was "to put one thing with another in considering circumstances". (Vine's Expository Dictionary). Mary must have been in awe as she recalled these things that the shepherds told her as she watched Jesus’ life, death, burial, and resurrection, and outpouring of His Spirit on Pentecost unfold.

"And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them." - Luke 2:20 KJV

Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

"Bethlehem" means "House of bread."

Jesus is the "Bread of Life."

And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger..." - John 6:35

"I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." - John 6:51

The word “manger” is mentioned three times in Luke’s account of the birth of Jesus. In Luke 2:12 it says it is a sign!

"And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. ... And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. ... And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger." - Luke 2:7, 12, 16

What could this sign be?

According to Thayer’s Lexicon, the word “crib” is another word for “manger”. It means feeding trough. "Crib" is found in Isaiah 1:3.

"Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider." - Isaiah 1:2-3

Rebellion brings spiritual blindness. It appears the Lord is revealing that because of rebellion, Israel would not recognize their Savior.

When Jesus ministered among His people, Israel did not recognize that Jesus is God.

The Bible says the ox and the donkey at the manger had more understanding than the Lord’s own people.

“An ox knows its owner, and a donkey its master’s manger, but Israel does not know, My people do not understand.” (NLT)

"He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not." - John 1:10-11

"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." - John 1:12-13 KJV (John 3:3, 5; Acts 2:38)

"Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not." - 1 John 3:1 KJV

The Everlasting Father robed Himself in flesh, was born in Bethlehem, bringing Peace to mankind by the Divine Mercy of His Gospel (Acts 2:38)

"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." - Matthew 1:21 KJV

One characteristic of the Gospel and the Kingdom of God is that it multiplies. (Mark 16:15, Luke 24:47)

Multiplication of lights is also a characteristic of the Hanukkah celebration.

The Hanukkah lights are lit the first one the first night, the first one again and the second one the second night, the first and second one again and third one on the third night, and so on. If you notice and count how many times lights are lit, it is not simply eight lights; rather it is a multiplication of lights.

Over the course of eight nights, there are lights lit thirty-two times, steadily increasing the number and brightness of the Chanukah lights from night to night.

In this way, the Hanukkah lights are a metaphor of the Kingdom of God.

Jesus began with twelve disciples. (Matthew 10:1-4, Mark 3:14-19, Luke 6:13-16)

On the Day of Pentecost, in the upper room there were one hundred twenty disciples. (Acts 1:15)

When they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, Peter preached the gospel and three thousand were added. (Acts 2:41)

Two chapters later, five thousand were added. (Acts 4:4)

And they kept multiplying. (Acts 6:7, Acts 9:31)

God’s Holy Spirit was poured out and the children of light were multiplied! (Acts 12:24)

"And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved." - Acts 2:46-47 KJV

"That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;" - Philippians 2:15

The Tabernacle in the wilderness, and then the holy Temple in Jerusalem, contained in the Holy Place a menorah with seven golden candlesticks. These candlesticks were fueled by pure oil, symbolic of the Holy Spirit of God. The lights were to burn continually, providing the only light within the tabernacle. The light from the menorah was concealed, seen only by the priests that ministered within the tabernacle. (Leviticus 24:1-3)

The number seven symbolizes perfection – perfection that is possible by natural means. The Holy Temple's menorah, which lit the natural world with the radiance of holiness, had seven branches.

The number eight symbolizes that which is beyond nature and its limited perfection, one step above the natural order. The Hanukah menorah has eight branches. God gave the Jews a miracle higher than nature – lasting eight days with the miracle of oil – celebrated by lighting the eight-branched menorah on Hanukkah.

While the light of the menorah of the Holy Temple was concealed in darkness, the menorah of Hanukkah is mandated to be revealed to the world. It is to be set in a window facing a public thoroughfare or in a doorway so the world may see the light and the great miracle that it represents.

Jesus fulfills the light of the seven golden candlesticks with natural perfection and holiness, that was concealed until the fulness of time was come.

"But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons." - Galatians 4:4-5 KJV

Jesus also fulfills the light of the eight candlesticks of the Hanukkah menorah light that is revealed, beyond nature and above natural order.

Jesus is the Light.

"In him was life; and the life was the light of men. ... That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world." - John 1:4, 9 KJV

The lights of the eight branched Hanukkah are to be lit only after it becomes dark outside and must contain enough fuel at the time of the lighting to burn until 30 minutes after nightfall.

"I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness." - John 12:46 KJV

"As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." - John 9:5 KJV

"The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up." - Matthew 4:16 KJV (Isaiah 9:2)

"To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." - Luke 1:79 KJV

The Dedication part 2

Jesus is the Light of the world

Simeon spoke of Jesus when He was a baby,

"A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel." - Luke 2:32 KJV (NLT: He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel!")

Jesus said, "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." - John 8:12 KJV

The Bible speaks of Jesus being in Jerusalem at the time of Hanukkah, which the Bible calls “the feast of the dedication.” (John 10:22 KJV/NLT)

Hanukkah is also known today as the Festival of Lights.

There is much of Hanukkah that is symbolic of Christ and of the New Covenant.

The eight holders for the Hanukkah lights are for oil (preferably) or candles, just as the lights that were in the temple were fueled by pure olive oil, symbolic of God’s Holy Spirit. They are lit during the eight nights of Hanukkah.

The Hanukkah menorah has eight candles (or holders for oil), plus an additional candle, set apart from the rest, for the “Shamash” or “servant” candle. Each light of the menorah is lit by the Shamash (servant candle). It appears that Jesus represents the servant candle.

To be kosher, the Shamash (servant candle) must be offset on a higher or on a lower plane than the main eight candles. Jesus, the Almighty God revealed in flesh, came as a servant.

"He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. ... Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet." - John 13:4-5, 13-14 KJV

"Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." - Philippians 2:6-8 KJV

The Father came in the form of man to redeem man from sin so that He could pour out His Spirit on all flesh.

"And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit." - Joel 2:27-29 KJV

The Light of the world would pour out His Holy Spirit on all flesh, so that we could be light in the Lord.

"For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:" - Ephesians 5:8 KJV

What is Hanukkah?

Hanukkah, also called Chanukah, began tonight, December 12, 2017, at dusk.

It is the Jewish “festival of lights,” celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers and fried foods.

The Hebrew word “Hanukkah” means “Dedication.” On this day in 139 BC the Temple was repaired, cleansed and rededicated. This is after the Temple was defiled by the Syrian-Greek king Antiochus IV and his armies, who had tried to forcefully uproot the beliefs and practices of Judaism from the people of Israel. Jewish worship was forbidden, the scrolls of the Law were confiscated and burned, and Sabbath rest, circumcision and the dietary laws were prohibited under penalty of death.

Antiochus sent his General Apolonius to wipe out Judah and his followers, the Maccabees. Though greater in number and equipment than their adversaries, the Syrians were defeated by the Maccabees.

The Maccabees returned to Jerusalem to liberate it. They entered the Temple and cleared it of the idols placed there by the Syrians. Judah and his followers built a new altar, which he dedicated on the 25^th of the Hebrew month Kislev, in the year 3622 (139 BC).

All the Temple's oil had also been defiled by the pagan invaders. When the Jews went to re-light the Temple's Golden Candlesticks, they could only find one small cruse of olive oil that was ritually pure. By a miracle of God, it continued to burn for eight days, until new oil was made available. In memory of this, Jewish sages appointed these eight days for annual thanksgiving and for lighting candles.

For eight nights, candles are lit to recall and publicize this great miracle. A menorah holds eight candles, with one additional candle placed above the rest that is used to light the other candles. On the first night, one candle is lit. On the second night, two candles are lit, and so on until the eighth night. It is said that throughout the eight nights, the lights are multiplied, totaling thirty-six lights lit over 8 nights. It is required that the menorah lights be set in a window or doorway so that the world that passes by can see the light. A menorah is lit in every household.

Hanukkah is mentioned in the New Testament as the feast of the dedication.

"And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter." - John 10:22 KJV [Another translation: “It was now winter, and Jesus was in Jerusalem at the time of Hanukkah, the Festival of Dedication.” – John 10:22 NLT]

Why was Jesus born in Bethlehem?

Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem fulfilled the prophecy of Micah.

"But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting." - Micah 5:2 KJV

Jesus was born King of the Jews. Wise men saw His star and searched for Him.

"Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him." - Matthew 2:1-2 KJV

Perhaps the wise men were searching for the star spoken of by the Gentile prophet Balaam.

"I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel..." - Numbers 24:17 KJV

Isaiah prophesied of the visitation of the wise men (kings).

"And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising." - Isaiah 60:3 KJV

Isaiah foretold of the birth of Christ. He confirmed what Micah foretold, that the ruler “whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting” would rule Israel. Isaiah said the child that would be born to rule on the throne of David was the everlasting Father, The mighty God.

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this." - Isaiah 9:6-7 KJV

All the fullness of the Father was within the body of Christ. (Colossians 1:19, Colossians 2:8-9) From the womb He was holy and without sin. (Luke 1:35) Throughout His life He was in all points tempted, yet remained without sin. (Hebrews 4:15)

The way Jesus in the body of human flesh was able to live in this world with all its temptations, and still remain holy and without sin, was by the power of His Spirit, the Father within.

While the body of Jesus was born from Mary's womb as the Son of God, the Father gives us power to BECOME sons of God when we are born AGAIN.

"He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." - John 1:10-13 KJV

We become born of God when we are born of water and of the Spirit. (John 3:3, 5) We are born of water when we are buried with Him by baptism, the name of Jesus called upon us, His precious blood washing away our sins through His name. (Romans 6:4, Colossians 2:12, Acts 22:16, Matthew 26:28, Acts 2:38, Revelation 1:5) We are born of the Spirit when we are filled with the same power that gave the body of Christ power over temptation and sin. We receive the gift of His Holy Ghost, speaking in other tongues as His Spirit gives us utterance. (Acts 1:8, Luke 24:49, Acts 2:38-39, Acts 2:4, Acts 10:45-46, Acts 19:6)   

When we have the Spirit of God within us, we have the Father in us. (John 14:23, Matthew 10:18-20).

Just as Christ is the temple of God, we become the temple of God when we are born again of water and of the Spirit. (John 2:19-21, 1Corinthians 3:17, 2Corinthians 6:16, 1Corinthians 6:19) Because we have come out from among the world and been born again, the Father receives us as His sons and daughters and dwells within us. (2Corinthians 6:14-18, 1John 2:15-16)

When Philip asked Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus answered,

"Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father…" - John 14:9 KJV

With the name of Jesus upon us, and the Father within us, we have the power to overcome and live a holy life. We have become the body of Christ. (1 Corinthians 12:27, 1 Corinthians 10:16-17) Are we able to say, When you have seen me, you have seen the Father? (Acts 1:8)

"Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore." - Psalm 16:11

When Christ was born, the angels gave glory to God declaring peace on earth and blessing upon mankind.

"And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." - Luke 2:13-14 KJV

What is this peace and blessing?

God brought peace by the blood of His cross through the gospel, reconciling man back to Himself.

"And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven." - Colossians 1:20 KJV

This peace of reconciliation between God and mankind was foretold by the prophet Isaiah.

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this." - Isaiah 9:6-7 KJV

God would be manifest in flesh (1Timothy 3:16) – the everlasting Father would be born in human flesh as the Son of man (Isaiah 9:6, Matthew 20:28, John 14:7, Luke 21:36). He would be the Prince of Peace for He would bring peace between Himself and man by the sacrifice of His own flesh and blood. The Father Himself would take the justice due to us, receiving the judgment of our sins for us with His own blood (Acts 20:28).

The zeal of the LORD – God’s love for mankind – performed this humbling of Himself to redeem us from sin and death. God’s passion for His beloved caused Him His great sacrifice.

"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage." - Hebrews 2:14-15 KJV

What is this “government upon his shoulder” that was established by judgment and justice bringing everlasting peace?

This government is the kingdom of God which we enter by birth – being born again of water and of the Spirit. (John 3:5).

The gospel of the kingdom is how we are born of the water and of the Spirit. It is the gospel of peace – bringing us peace with God.

"And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!" - Romans 10:15 KJV

Peter was sent by God to preach the gospel of peace, beginning on the Day of Pentecost.

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

“For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." - Acts 2:38-39 KJV

Those that obey this gospel of peace find true peace and blessings from The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace – JESUS.

Our heavenly Father put on a human body and dwelt among His creation. He came in His name Jesus, which us above every name.

"That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;" - Philippians 2:10

"Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?" - John 14:9

"And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory." - 1 Timothy 3:16

The Holy Ghost that was poured out on the Day of Pentecost is the Spirit that is in Christ.

"He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)" - John 7:38-39

"And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." - Acts 2:4

The Father is Spirit. The Father is revealed in flesh (humanity). The Father’s human body is called by His name, Jesus. The Father is in us when we are filled with His Spirit.

"For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you." - Matthew 10:20

"Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you." - John 14:17

Jesus was speaking to His disciples. They knew Him. He dwelt with them. When He said He would be in them, Jesus was talking about His Spirit being in them.

"But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:" - John 15:26

"He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him." - John 14:21

Jesus is the Father. Jesus is Spirit. Jesus has a body (the son of God/the flesh of God).

There is only one Spirit, referred to as the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of Christ, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, Spirit of your Father, the Spirit.

"Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him." - John 14:23

"I and my Father are one." - John 10:30

The Father, the Spirit of God, is in Christ. When we receive the Holy Ghost, we receive the Father in us.

"There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." - Ephesians 4:4-6

Jesus gave power to His church to forgive/remit sins through water baptism in Jesus name.

"And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to his house. But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men." - Matthew 9:2-8 KJV

Jesus gave power to His disciples in the Great Commission to forgive sins. He revealed the power to forgive/remit sins is in baptism in the name of Jesus (“JESUS” is THE NAME of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, which are simply TITLES of God).

"And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen." - Matthew 28:18-20 KJV

Jesus is our heavenly Father and Creator of the universe that came in the form of man - the Son of man. Earlier in Matthew, it is recorded Jesus gave power to forgive sins to men. At the end of Matthew, Jesus told His disciples when speaking of His power that THEY were to GO YE THEREFORE, TEACHING and BAPTIZING. This is where the power to forgive sins is -baptizing in Jesus name.

Jesus gave this same instruction in the Great Commission according to John.

"Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained." - John 20:21-23 KJV

Jesus told them whosever sins they remitted, they would be remitted. (And whosever sins they retained are retained). We see this in water baptism in the name of Jesus for the remission of sins.

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38 KJV

The Greek word for remission in Acts 2:38 is translated as "remission" 9x and "forgiveness" 6x in KJV. (Other translations use the word "forgiveness" in Acts 2:38 as well.)

God chose the church to preach/teach and to water baptize. God Spirit baptizes. (John 3:5).

Jesus spoke of remission (forgiveness) of sins in the Great Commission according to Luke.

"And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high." - Luke 24:46-49 KJV [“Power” in this verse is the Greek word “dynamis,” meaning strength power, ability. It is used for the power of the Holy Ghost. (see Acts 1:8). “Power” in Matthew 9:6-8 and Matthew 28:18 is the Greek word “exousia,” meaning authority.]

Jesus speaks of baptism for salvation in the Great Commission according to Mark.

"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." - Mark 16:15-18 KJV

The Greek word for “damned” means, “to give judgment against, to judge worthy of punishment.”

When a person is baptized in Jesus name they are baptized for the remission of sins. The meaning of the Greek word “remission” is, “forgiveness or pardon, of sins (letting them go as if they had never been committed), remission of the penalty.” (Thayer's Greek Lexicon)

We can thus see why baptism in Jesus name for the remission of sins saves us from “judgment against” us, “judgment worthy of punishment.” (“Damnation”). It is because by baptism in Jesus name our sins are remitted/forgiven.

The people truly had the right reaction when Jesus told them He had given men power on earth to forgive sins!
