From the Old Man to the New Man

When we obey the gospel we repent of our sins, are baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission of our sins, and receive the gift of His Spirit, the Holy Ghost. Our old life is passed away; our new life has begun! (Acts 2:38).

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." - 2 Corinthians 5:17

"That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness." - Ephesians 4:22-24 KJV

"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like [sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these.]: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God." - Galatians 5:19-21 KJV

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." - Galatians 5:22-23 KJV

"And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." - Galatians 5:24-25 KJV

What is Repentance?

"It is a change of mind, that leads to a change of heart, that leads to a change in actions. This change involves both a turning from sin and a turning to God."

This change of mind is not something that goes back and forth every day, choosing God, then choosing sin. True repentance is a life change.

When we repent, we do not CONTINUE in sin, saying to ourselves that grace will keep covering our sinful lifestyle.

What does Paul say about this?

"What shall we say then? Shall we CONTINUE in sin, that grace may abound? GOD FORBID. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should WALK IN NEWNESS OF LIFE.

“For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that HENCEFORTH WE SHOULD NOT SERVE SIN." - Romans 6:1-6 KJV (My italics).

Jesus gives us the gift of His Spirit so that we CAN walk in newness of life. His Spirit leads us to make changes in our life to become holy. The Spirit of Jesus gives us His power to overcome temptation and live a victorious life. With His Spirit, Jesus opens our eyes to see the way of escape from temptations. Praying in every situation, being led by His Spirit, and staying full of His Spirit, we keep the victory.

(Acts 2:38-39, Acts 1:8, Romans 12:1-2, John 14:26, 1 Corinthians 2:16, Ephesians 4:11-15, 1Corinthians 10:13, Romans 8:5-16, 1 John 5:4).

Acts 2:38

Peter preached the Gospel on the Day of Pentecost.

"Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?" - Acts 2:37

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38

As Ananias said to Paul,

"And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord." - Acts 22:16

When Peter preached Acts 2:38, they did not tarry - they were baptized that same day.

"Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls." - Acts 2:41

"And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers." - Acts 2:42

If Ye Had Known Me, Ye Should Have Known My Father Also

When Jesus was speaking to His disciples, He was speaking to men that believe in God. They knew God is a Spirit. They knew God as their Heavenly Father. They knew there is only one God. (John 4:24, Isaiah 64:8, Malachi 2:10, Deuteronomy 6:4)

Jesus had been with these men for quite some time. They had seen His miracles. They had seen Him raise the dead, open blind eyes, heal the sick, cleanse the leper, multiply fish and loaves, command the wind and seas and they obeyed Him. They even saw Him walk on water.

Yet, they were still having trouble grasping that this man Jesus, that grew tired, hungry, and thirsty, was their Heavenly Father in a human body. (John 1:1, 14).

It appears that in His attempt to bridge the span of their understanding, Jesus used language to transition His disciples thinking to understand He is the Almighty God operating within a human body. The invisible God was now revealed. (John 1:18).

"Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me." - John 12:44-45 KJV

"For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak." - John 12:49-50 KJV

Jesus communicated that He is a man, but at the same time the Spirit of God is within Him. He was letting His disciples know, His body/flesh is the image of their Heavenly Father. (Colossians 1:15, 2Corinthians 4:4-6).

Jesus said to Thomas,

"If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him." - John 14:7 KJV

"Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

“Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?" - John 14:8-9 KJV

Jesus let them know that the words He spoke was God speaking to them, for God is in Him. (2Corinthians 5:19).

He reminded them of all the works that He had done that only God can do.

"Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake." - John 14:10-11 KJV

Then later Jesus told His disciples,

"He that hateth me hateth my Father also. If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father." - John 15:23-24 KJV

Jesus let them know,

"I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. ... They understood not that he spake to them of the Father." - John 8:24, 27 KJV (Exodus 3:14).

Walking in the Spirit - Part 2

Now that we have repented of our sins, have been water baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission of sins, and have received the gift of the Holy Ghost, we need to stay full of the Holy Ghost.

Jesus said we must be born again. We can compare our spiritual birth with our natural birth. When a baby is born, there is first water. When the baby emerges from the womb, the baby takes a breath and lets out a cry. We can see this being like our spiritual birth – water baptism and Spirit baptism. When we are filled with the Spirit there is a sound – speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance.

"And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." - Acts 2:4 KJV

Jesus told Nicodemus,

"The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit." - John 3:8 KJV

While a baby breathes his first breath when he is born, it is necessary that the baby keeps breathing to live.

When we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, it is not a one-time experience. We need to stay full of the Holy Ghost.

When Peter and John taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead, the rulers of the people and elders of Israel threw them in jail. The next day, they brought them out. When questioned, Peter, “filled with the Holy Ghost,” preached the gospel to them. (See Acts 4). The council then conferred among themselves.

"And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus." - Acts 4:18 KJV

"And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them." - Acts 4:23 KJV

"And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord…" - Acts 4:24 KJV

"And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness." - Acts 4:31 KJV

Walking in the Spirit - Part 1

"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. [Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.]" - Galatians 5:16 KJV

How do we walk in the Spirit?

First of all, we must be filled with the Spirit. The Spirit of God has many titles – Holy Ghost, Holy Spirit, Spirit of Truth, Comforter, Spirit of your Father, Spirit of Christ, Spirit of God, Spirit of the Lord, Spirit of holiness… The one name that is attached to all these titles is Jesus. (John 14:26).

Jesus is the Father manifest in flesh (John 14:7-10). It took a human that was without sin to pay the price of our sins to reconcile us back to God. Because there was no human that was born without sin, God overshadowed Mary causing her to conceive. That holy child is the only begotten Son of God.

"The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God." - Luke 1:35 KJV

The Son of God is the flesh and blood body of God. Jesus was born the only begotten Son of God. We BECOME sons of God when we are born AGAIN. When we are born of water and of the Spirit, as Jesus taught, the name of Jesus is given to us. We are called by His name. When we are filled with the Holy Ghost, we have the Spirit of Jesus within us. This new birth makes us a son of God.

"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." - John 1:12-13 KJV

If we want to go to heaven, being born again - water baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission of our sins and being Spirit baptized by being filled with the Holy Ghost - is not an option; Jesus said it is a requirement.

"Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." - John 3:5 KJV (Matthew 16:18-19, Acts 2:37-42,47).

The Gospel Ark of Safety - the Kingdom of God

Jesus could come at any time. If you are not in the gospel ark of safety - the kingdom of God - now is the time to enter.

“But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

“Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.” – Matthew 24:44

What must we do to be ready?

“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” – John 3:5

We find that to be born of water is to be water baptized in the name of Jesus. We find that to be born of the Spirit is to be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” – Acts 2:1-4

Peter used the keys of the kingdom Jesus gave him (Matthew 16:19). Full of the Holy Ghost, Peter stood up with the other eleven apostles and for the first time preached the gospel –the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. (1Corinthians 15:1-4).

“Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” – Acts 2:38

“Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.” – Acts 2:41

“And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers…and the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.” Acts 2:42, 47

God is a Spirit. He is the Spirit of truth.

God is a Spirit. He is the Spirit of truth. He is our Father. His name is Jesus.

The Father created a sinless human body for Himself so that He could pay the price of death for our sins and reconcile us back to Himself. (2Cor.5:19, 21).

Jesus revealed to His chosen disciples that He was the Father in a human body. (John 14:7-11). They knew Him as a man that had flesh and blood like themselves, grew tired and hungry, and prayed. They also knew Him as the Mighty God that caused the winds to cease, multiplied the fish and the loaves, raised the dead, healed the sick, forgave sins, cast out devils, and answered prayers.

Jesus told His disciples it was necessary for Him to suffer, be killed, and be raised again the third day. The Father’s only begotten flesh would die. By His death, He would make peace between Himself and man so that man could once again be filled with His Spirit. (Matt.16:21, Isaiah 9:6-7, Col.1:19-23).

He had dwelt with them; soon He would dwell in them. (2Cor.6:16, 1Cor.6:19-20).

"And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you." - John 14:16-18

After Jesus ascended in bodily form up to heaven, Apostle Peter on the Day of Pentecost preached the gospel message of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. When the people heard this, they were pricked in their hearts and asked what they should do.

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38

The Spirit of truth that had been with them, Jesus Christ, the Father revealed in flesh, would now be in them.

"For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." - Acts 2:39

Acts 2:38 The original New Testament plan of salvation

 Here are the verses:

Jesus Died

"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;" - 1 Corinthians 15:1-3

Jesus Was Buried

"And that he was buried…" - 1 Corinthians 15:4

Jesus Rose Again

"And that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:" - 1 Corinthians 15:4

We Must “Die”

"God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?" - Romans 6:2

We Must Be “Buried”

"Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death..." - Romans 6:3-4

We Must “Rise Again”

"That like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." - Romans 6:3-4

"For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." - Romans 8:2

ACTS 2:38

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38

What does the Bible say the gospel is and how are we saved?

It says the gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:" - 1 Corinthians 15:1-4

Does the Bible say the gospel saves us?

Yes – “By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.”  UNLESS we have believed in vain.

The word “vain” means “without success or effect” (Thayer’s Greek Lexicon).

We must OBEY the gospel after we believe it. If we believe but do NOT obey the gospel, the gospel will not be a success in our life, because we did not allow it to have an EFFECT on our life.

How do we obey the gospel - the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus?

We obey the death of Jesus by becoming “dead to sin” by repentance, His burial by being “buried with Him” by water baptism in the name of Jesus, and His resurrection by being “raised up” by His glory by the baptism of His Spirit.

The Bible explains this:

"God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." - Romans 6:2-4 KJV (Read Romans 6:1-13).

How do we obey the gospel so that we are saved?

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38 KJV

It’s not how we start the race; it is how we finish it.

 Apostle Paul wrote,

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing." - 2 Timothy 4:7-8

"In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." - 1 Corinthians 15:52

"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

“Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord." - 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

Jesus taught his disciples,

"Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come." - Matthew 24:42 KJV

On the Day of Pentecost Peter preached the gospel.

"Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

“For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

“And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

“Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

“And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers." - Acts 2:37-42 KJV

Apostle Paul wrote,

"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord." - 1 Corinthians 15:58

Jesus - No Other Foundation

Our life is like a house. How we live our life is how we build our house. If we want our house to stand and not fall, we must lay a foundation for our house on a rock.

Our Rock is Jesus. He is the Eternal and Almighty God, the Creator of the Universe. He is our Savior, Friend, Deliverer, and Healer. He is our Refuge and Strength, an ever-present help in time of trouble.

The foundation for our house is repentance – turning our life from sinful living to holy living; baptism in the name of Jesus – making a covenant to live our life for God; and receiving the Holy Ghost – the Spirit of Jesus to lead, teach, comfort, love, and strengthen us.

When our life is built on Jesus, the storms of life cannot shake us. Jesus is with us and will see us through whatever life may bring.

"Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

“But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great." - Luke 6:47-49 KJV

Part Three - When did the early church baptize new converts?

When the Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

Paul and Silas answered.

"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house." - Acts 16:31-32 KJV

When did the jailer and his household get baptized after they heard the word of the Lord?

The same hour of the night.

"And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway." - Acts 16:33 KJV

When Paul traveled to Ephesus, he found disciples of John. He asked them,

"Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?

“And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost." - Acts 19:2 KJV [Note: They had heard about the Holy Ghost from John the Baptist. They had not heard that the Holy Ghost was being poured out.]

"And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized?

“And they said, Unto John's baptism." - Acts 19:3 KJV

"Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus." - Acts 19:4 KJV

When did the men get baptized?

They got baptized as soon as they heard this.

"When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus." - Acts 19:5 KJV

Part Two - When did the early church baptize new converts?

When Saul (that later was called Paul) was on his way to Damascus to persecute Christians, suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven and the voice of Jesus spoke to him. He then told Saul to go into the city, and it would be told him what he must do.

"And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink." - Acts 9:9 KJV

Jesus then appeared in a vision to Ananias, a disciple, sending him to Saul to pray for him.

"And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized." - Acts 9:17-18 KJV

We see that Saul (Paul) was baptized at the same time Ananias prayed for him to receive his sight and to be filled with the Holy Ghost.

At a later time, Paul testified to Jews of his conversion.

"And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there, Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him." - Acts 22:12-13 KJV

"And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord." - Acts 22:16 KJV

When God called Peter to preach to the Gentiles (see Acts 10:1-48), the Holy Ghost fell on all those which heard the word.

And the Jewish believers that came with Peter were astonished, because that Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

"For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

“Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

“And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord..." - Acts 10:46-48 KJV

When the Gentiles received the Holy Ghost, Peter immediately COMMANDED them to be baptized.

When Did the Early Church Baptize?

When did the early church baptize new converts?

On the Day of Pentecost, Peter preached the gospel. He then preached how to obey the gospel.

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38 KJV

The Bible says that after Peter preached this message,

"Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls." - Acts 2:41 KJV

We see that those that gladly received Peter’s gospel message were baptized that same day.

The Bible records Philip preaching in Samaria.

"Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them." - Acts 8:5 KJV

When were the Samaritans baptized in the name of Jesus?

"But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women." - Acts 8:12 KJV

God called Philip to go out to the desert.

"And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet." - Acts 8:27-28 KJV

The man asked Philip to come up in the chariot and sit with him, so that Philip could explain the scripture in Isaiah that foretold Christ’s death. (Isaiah 53:7-8).

"Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus." - Acts 8:35 KJV

"And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?" - Acts 8:36 KJV

"And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God [God manifest in flesh]." - Acts 8:37 KJV

"And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him." - Acts 8:38 KJV

Binding and Loosing - Part Two

"And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved." - Acts 15:1 KJV

"When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question." - Acts 15:2 KJV

"And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.

“But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

“And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter." - Acts 15:4-6 KJV

"And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

“And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; and put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith." - Acts 15:7-9 KJV

"Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke [the Law of Moses] upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they." - Acts 15:10-11 KJV

James answered,

"Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: but that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood." - Acts 15:19-20 KJV

While Jesus gave Peter authority to bind and loose, the second time Jesus mentions it, it is to the disciples.

"Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." - Matthew 18:18 KJV

In this case, both the authority to declare law and to annul law was taken by the apostles and the elders with the whole church. Circumcision and the Law of Moses was annulled for the Gentiles. The law that was declared for the Gentiles was the four requirements. (Acts 15:24, 28-29).

Keys to the Kingdom, Binding and Loosing

On the Day of Pentecost, Apostle Peter, freshly filled with the initial outpouring of the Holy Ghost, stood up to speak with authority to those Jews that had gathered.

"But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:" - Acts 2:14 KJV

Having his understanding opened by Jesus when he received the Great Commission (Luke 24:44-49), Peter preached the first gospel message (Acts 2:14-40).

Jesus had given Peter the keys of the kingdom and authority to bind and loose.

"And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." - Matthew 16:19 KJV

According to Thayer’s Greek Lexicon, it appears that the authority Jesus gave Peter to bind and loose was authority to declare law and to annul law.

When the Jews heard that Jesus, whom they had crucified, is both Lord and Christ, they were pricked in their hearts and asked Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? (Acts 2:36-37).

It was at this point, that Peter used his authority to declare law that would officially be keys to the kingdom. Peter was establishing doctrine for salvation – Acts 2:38.

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38.

"For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." - Acts 2:39 KJV

Peace with God by the Gospel - Part Two

Jesus brought peace to mankind by the gospel. The gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. (1Cor.15:1-4)

Colossians 1:20 KJV - And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

We have peace with God by obeying the gospel. When we have obeyed the gospel, we are no longer separated from God by sin. (Is.59:2,16,Is.53:1,Ro.1:16,Col.1:5,2Tim.1:10)

We obey the gospel by turning away from sin by a repentant heart. We bury our sins by water baptism in the name of Jesus. We receive the gift of His Holy Ghost speaking in other tongues as His Spirit gives the utterance. (Rom.6:1-6, Col.2:12,1Cor.6:11,Rev.1:5,Acts2:4,10:45-46,Acts2:38)

We are reconciled back to God when we have obeyed the gospel. We are forgiven of our sins. God has filled us with His Spirit. We have life and peace.

By staying full of the Holy Ghost, God’s Spirit, we keep the peace we have with God, resisting sin and blameless.

Galatians 5:16 KJV - This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Romans 8:6 KJV - For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

2 Peter 3:13-14 KJV - Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

Peace - Part One

The Father manifested Himself in flesh to bring peace between us and Himself.

Isaiah 9:6 KJV - For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Our sin separates us from God. Because He loves us so much, He humbled Himself and took on the form of man, allowing Himself to be crucified in order to make this peace between us.

Philippians 2:7-8 KJV - But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

God made peace, reconciling us back to Himself, by paying the price of death for our sins.

2 Corinthians 5:19 KJV - To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

What is this word of reconciliation? The Gospel.

Jesus died for our sins, He was buried, and on the third day He rose again.

Acts 2:38 KJV - Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 2:39 KJV - For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

The Love of God

The Love of God

Some people ask, why did God put a tree in the garden of Eden that would bring death to Adam and Eve if they chose to eat it?

"And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." - Genesis 2:16-17

Love isn’t love without free choice.

"If ye love me, keep my commandments." - John 14:15

And what is death? God said they would surely die if they ate of the tree.

Spiritual death, which comes by sin, is separation from God.

"Wherefore, as by one man [Adam] sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:" - Romans 5:12

"But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear." - Isaiah 59:2

Yet, God loves us. He manifested Himself in flesh so that He could pay the price of our sins and reconcile us back to Himself. (Colossians 1:20-23).

"To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them..." - 2 Corinthians 5:19

Those that choose to love God will obey the gospel and have eternal life with Him.

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." - Romans 6:23

This is why those that were baptized in the name of Jesus and filled with His Spirit were said to have ‘fallen asleep,' not died.

"And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep." - Acts 7:59-60

This is why Jesus said,

"I am come that they might have life..." - John 10:10

“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies."

“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

"The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

"She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

"She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

"She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

"She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

"She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.  She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

"Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

"She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

"Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates." - Proverbs 31:10-31 KJV

The Gospel

 Jesus commanded His disciples.

"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." - Mark 16:15 KJV

"He that believeth [the gospel] and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." - Mark 16:16 KJV

We find that when we believe AND obey the gospel, we find salvation. We obey the gospel by being baptized in water and of the Spirit. (John 3:5).

Those that preach the gospel must be sent, preaching the true gospel which brings salvation.

"And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?" - Romans 10:15-16 KJV

Apostle Paul explained the gospel.

"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain." - 1 Corinthians 15:1-2 KJV

Paul declared the gospel, preaching to the people. The people received the gospel. They stood by the gospel. They were saved by obedience to the gospel. (If they had believed the gospel, but had not obeyed the gospel, they would have believed in vain.)

"For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:" - 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 KJV

How do we obey the gospel – the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus?

Repentance is death to sin, water baptism in the name of Jesus is burial of old nature, Holy Ghost infilling is resurrection to new life.

Apostle Peter preached on the Day of Pentecost how we obey the gospel.

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38 KJV

Put Off Your Old Man, Put On the New Man

Our “old man” is our old sinful nature that we have “crucified” by our repenting of our sins. We then buried our old sinful nature when we were baptized in the name of Jesus.

We put on the “new man” when we came up out of the water in the name of Jesus, and when we were filled with the Spirit of Jesus, which is the Holy Ghost. (Romans 6:4, Acts 2:38).

From this point on, we no longer serve sin. We are no longer slaves to sin.

"Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin." - Romans 6:6

"But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath [rage], malice [malicious behavior], blasphemy [slander], filthy communication out of your mouth [dirty language]. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; and have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him [as you learn to know your Creator and become like him]:" - Colossians 3:8-10

"That ye put off concerning the former conversation [conduct] the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful [deceiving] lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind [instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes]; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness." - Ephesians 4:22-24

Jesus Baptized

On the day of Pentecost, Peter, standing up with the other eleven apostles, preached to the Jews that had gathered, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”

When did Peter and the eleven apostles get baptized in the name of Jesus, and who baptized them?

Jesus baptized. A few verses after John 3:16, and after John 3:5 where Jesus told Nicodemus “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God,” the Bible tells us that Jesus baptized.

John 3:22 “After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.”

Some of John the Baptist’s disciples came to John, questioning him. John’s disciples apparently were concerned because after John the Baptist baptized Jesus, Jesus’ ministry began growing faster than John’s. Jesus was baptizing.

John 3:26 “And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.”

The disciples of Jesus also baptized, most likely taking over baptizing after Jesus baptized them.

John 4:1-3 “When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) he left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.”

Thus, on the day of Pentecost, all the disciples of Jesus gathered in the upper room waiting for the promise of the Holy Ghost were already baptized in the name of Jesus. There were probably about a hundred and twenty disciples all together (Acts 1:15).

After Peter preached the gospel message, the Bible says about three thousand were baptized and ADDED to the disciples.

Acts 2:41 “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.”

Acts 2:47 “… And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”

Becoming the Temple of God - Part Two

"Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body." - John 2:19-21

While Jesus was born the temple of God, we must be born again of water and of the Spirit in order to become the temple of God. (John 3:5).

We are born of water by water baptism in the name of Jesus for the remission (forgiveness) of sins. We are born of the Spirit by being baptized (filled) with the Holy Ghost, which is the Spirit of Jesus.

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38

As the temple of God, we have the name of Jesus called upon us, and the Spirit of Jesus in us.

"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's." - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are." - 1 Corinthians 3:16-17

"Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers… for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people." - 2 Corinthians 6:14, 16

"Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit." - Ephesians 2:19-22

The Body of Jesus - The Temple of God – Part One

"Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

“Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

“But he spake of the temple of his body.

“When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said." - John 2:19-22 KJV

The body of Jesus is the temple of God’s Spirit. All the fullness of God is in His body.

"For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily." - Colossians 2:9 KJV

When we worship Jesus, we are not worshipping a man – flesh – but rather the Spirit of God that dwells within the man.

We are not worshiping the temple, but rather the Spirit of God that dwells within the temple.

Jesus said, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” This temple which Jesus spoke of is His body.

The way they would “destroy” the body of Jesus was with the Roman half-way death of scourging, followed by a Roman crucifixion.

They put His dead body in a tomb, and on the third day the Spirit of God raised His body from the dead.

Jesus, resurrected by His Spirit, showed Himself alive to many witnesses over the next forty days, and then ascended up to heaven.

Ten days later, on the day of Pentecost, the Spirit of Jesus returned to fill the hundred and twenty disciples that were praying in the upper room in Jerusalem.

On that day, their bodies became the temple of God. (To be continued, Part 2)

Church!

"And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;" - Ephesians 4:11 KJV

One reason God gave the church these ministers:

"For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:" - Ephesians 4:12 KJV

"That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;" - Ephesians 4:14 KJV

We need pastors to teach us doctrine so we can stand in the truth.

"As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving." - Colossians 2:6-7 KJV

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." - Acts 2:38-39 KJV

"And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers." - Acts 2:42 KJV
