Spiritual Adultery
John the Baptist recognized Jesus as the Christ that had
come as the bridegroom to save His people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21, Isaiah 54:5, John 1:29, Romans 7:4).
"Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not
the Christ, but that I am sent before him. He that hath the bride is the
bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him,
rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is
fulfilled." - John 3:28-29
"For the husband is the head of the wife, even as
Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body…Husbands,
love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that
he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle,
or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish." -
Ephesians 5:23-27 [word=gospel - Thayer’s Greek Lexicon]
We become the bride (wife) of Christ when we turn our back
on the world by repentance, covenanting with Jesus by water baptism, taking His
name. (Acts 2:38, Acts 15:17, James 2:7).
"If ye were of the world, the world would love his own:
but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world,
therefore the world hateth you." - John 15:19 (John 17:14, John 15:19, 2Peter
1:4).
"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the
world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all
that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the
pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world." - 1 John
2:15-16
"Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the
friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a
friend of the world is the enemy of God." - James 4:4
