It appears that God's face is a metaphor of God’s mercy. When a
person looks upon God’s face, he is in God’s mercy.
"And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I
have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved." - Genesis 32:30 KJV
"And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land:
for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art
seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest
before them…" - Numbers 14:14 KJV
"And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man
speaketh unto his friend." - Exodus 33:11 KJV (Also: Deuteronomy 5:4,
34:10).
"For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face
to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am
known." - 1 Corinthians 13:12 KJV
The priestly blessing included, "The LORD make his face
shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:" - Numbers 6:25 KJV (See:
Daniel 9:17).
If God’s face is turned from us, hid from us, or set against
us, we are in God’s judgment.
"In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a
moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD
thy Redeemer." - Isaiah 54:8 KJV (Also: Deuteronomy 31:17-18, 32:20, Micah
3:4, Leviticus 17:10, 20:3, 5, 6, 26:17).
"For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and
his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them
that do evil." - 1 Peter 3:12 KJV
Those that are part of the church – that have repented of
their sins, have been baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission of their
sins, and have received the gift of the Holy Ghost, living a holy life, look
forward to “look upon His face, there to sing forever of His saving grace!”
"For God, who commanded the light to shine out of
darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the
glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." - 2 Corinthians 4:6 KJV
"And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in
their foreheads." - Revelation 22:4 KJV
