God is a Spirit. As a Spirit, He is invisible. As a Spirit, He fills the universe.
As a Spirit, He does not have a physical arm or hand, eyes
or ears.
We as humans have physical attributes. We understand that
our arm and our hand is where our strength and power is. We see with our eyes
and hear with our ears.
The Bible uses our physical attributes (as metaphors) to
describe God’s spiritual attributes. By this we can better understand and relate
to Him.
When the Bible speaks about the arm and hand of the Lord, it
is speaking about God’s strength and power. The arm of the Lord especially
speaks of God’s redeeming power.
"Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the
LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I
will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm,
and with great judgments:" - Exodus 6:6 KJV (Also: Deuteronomy 7:19, 26:8,
1 Kings 8:42, 2 Kings 17:36, Isaiah 33:2, Isaiah 63:12, Jeremiah 21:5, 32:17).
"Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness
of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O
LORD, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased." - Exodus
15:16 KJV
"Yet they are thy people and thine inheritance, which
thou broughtest out by thy mighty power and by thy stretched out arm." -
Deuteronomy 9:29 KJV
"Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons
of Jacob and Joseph. Selah." - Psalm 77:15 KJV
"O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done
marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the
victory." - Psalm 98:1 KJV
"O LORD, be gracious unto us; we have waited for thee:
be thou their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble."
- Isaiah 33:2 KJV
