God is a Spirit. In order that He might dwell among His people, God inhabited a tabernacle in the wilderness.
"And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, ... And let
them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them." - Exodus 25:1, 8
KJV
Years later, King Solomon built a temple in Jerusalem for
God to dwell in.
"But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the
heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that
I have builded?" - 1 Kings 8:27 KJV
"Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire
came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and
the glory of the LORD filled the house." - 2 Chronicles 7:1 KJV (2
Chronicles 5:13-14).
Now, beginning when
He created a sinless body to dwell in when He overshadowed Mary and she
conceived, God dwells in human bodies. (Luke 1:35, Colossians 2:9, Colossians
1:19, John 1:1, 14).
"Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this
temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six
years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But
he spake of the temple of his body." - John 2:19-21 KJV
By Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection, we are able to
become the temple of God when we repent, are baptized in the name of Jesus for
the remission of sins, and receive the gift of His Holy Ghost. (Acts 2:38, Ephesians
2:21-22).
"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye
shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
“For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to
all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." -
Acts 2:38-39 KJV
"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that
the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?" - 1 Corinthians 3:16 KJV
"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the
Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your
own?" - 1 Corinthians 6:19 KJV
