The New Covenant

 

John the Baptist’s baptism was “the baptism of repentance” in preparation for the coming of Christ. (Acts 19:4).

Repentance is being sorrowful for our sinful life. It is a change of heart and mind.  It is turning our lives to Jesus and away from sin.

Repentance prepares the way for baptism in the name of Jesus for the remission of our sins. (Acts 2:38).

Jesus brought His new covenant by His death on the cross. It is by Jesus’ death that He shed His blood for our sins. The new covenant is a blood covenant.

Jesus told His disciples,

"For this is my blood of the new testament [covenant], which is shed for many for the remission of sins." - Matthew 26:28 KJV (Leviticus 17:11, Hebrews 9:22).

By water baptism in the name of Jesus, we enter into His new covenant. By Jesus name baptism, the blood of Jesus is applied to our life. ("Testament" is another word for covenant.)

"Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:" - Romans 6:3-4 KJV

The name of Jesus carries His blood. When we are baptized in the name of Jesus, the blood of Jesus is applied to our life and our sins are remitted.

"And that repentance and REMISSION OF SINS should be preached IN HIS NAME among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." - Luke 24:47 KJV

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be BAPTIZED every one of you IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38 KJV

"To him give all the prophets witness, that THROUGH HIS NAME whosoever believeth in him shall receive REMISSION OF SINS." - Acts 10:43 KJV
