Paul persecuted the Christians, shutting them up in prison and having them put to death. Jesus appeared to Paul on the road to Damascus.
"Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and
commission from the chief priests, at midday, O king, I saw in the way a light
from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them
which journeyed with me. And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a
voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why
persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And I
said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. But
rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose,
to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast
seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; delivering thee
from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, to open
their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of
Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance
among them [God’s people] which are sanctified by faith that is in me." -
Acts 26:12-18 KJV
Jesus called Paul to preach the gospel to the Gentiles
(non-Jews).
Paul was blinded by the heavenly vision.
"And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named
Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I
am here, Lord. And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which
is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of
Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth, and hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias
coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight."
- Acts 9:10-12 KJV
"Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of
this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem...But the
Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my
name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:" - Acts
9:13, 15 KJV
