Jesus spoke to Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
"There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a
ruler of the Jews: the same came to Jesus by night..." - John 3:1-2 KJV
Jesus spoke to Nicodemus about a spiritual rebirth.
"Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I
say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of
God." - John 3:3 KJV
Nicodemus had trouble understanding that Jesus was speaking
of a spiritual birth, not a natural birth.
"Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when
he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be
born?" - John 3:4 KJV
"Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the
kingdom of God." - John 3:5 KJV
Jesus further explained.
"The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest
the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth:
so is every one that is born of the Spirit." - John 3:8 KJV
Jesus revealed that, like the wind, there is a sound that
comes with the birth of the Spirit.
When Jesus poured out His Spirit on the day of Pentecost,
there came a sound from heaven. This sound was compared to the wind.
"And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they
were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from
heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were
sitting." - Acts 2:1-2 KJV
That sound from heaven as of a rushing might wind was the
hundred and twenty believers in the upper room speaking in tongues as they were
born of the Spirit.
"And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and
began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." -
Acts 2:4 KJV
Just as Jesus said – “so is every one that is born of the
Spirit.”
