What is “the first day of the week”?
Most Christians go to church on the first day of the week.
In the Bible, the first day of the week is Sunday. It is the day after the
Sabbath.
On “the first day” of creation, God said, “Let there be
light.”
"And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the
darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And
the evening and the morning were the first day." - Genesis 1:3-5 KJV
The light was not something that was created, for God is
light. Rather, the light was manifested out of the darkness. The manifesting of
light in the beginning is also described in the New Testament:
"For God, who commanded the light to shine out of
darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the
glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen
vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us." -
2 Corinthians 4:6-7 KJV
Jesus is the Light, and we are to be a light to this world.
The only way we can be the light of Jesus to the world, is to turn from sin, be
baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission (washing away) of our sins, and
to be filled with His Spirit, the Holy Ghost. (Acts 2:38).
It seems appropriate for us to gather together as the church
on “the first day” of the week. The first day is when the light appeared, and
church is where we can learn about the true Light – Jesus – and to become His
light to the world! (Mark 16:9, John 20:19, John 20:26, Acts 20:7, 1Corinthians
16:2).
