The Evidence of the Holy Ghost
On the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Ghost was first
poured out, they all spoke with tongues, the sign they had received the Holy
Ghost.
"And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began
to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." - Acts
2:4 KJV
Speaking in tongues is the sign that a person has received
the Holy Ghost.
God called Peter to preach the gospel to the Gentiles. God
sent him to the house of Cornelius, where he had gathered his family and friends
to hear Peter preach.
"While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell
on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed
were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also
was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with
tongues, and magnify God." - Acts 10:44-46 KJV
Peter and the Jewish believers that came with him to
Cornelius’ house knew that they also received the Holy Ghost, for they heard the
Gentiles speak in tongues just as they did when they received the Holy Ghost.
After this, the believers at Jerusalem called Peter to
explain why he went into the home of uncircumcised Gentiles, which was against
their Jewish Law.
Peter explained how God had called him to go and preach the
gospel to them.
"And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them,
as on us at the beginning." - Acts 11:15 KJV
Because Peter heard the Gentiles all speaking in tongues –
the sign God filled them also with the Holy Ghost - the Jewish believers knew
that God had accepted the Gentiles.
"Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he
did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could
withstand God?" - Acts 11:17 KJV
"When they heard these things, they held their peace,
and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted
repentance unto life." - Acts 11:18 KJV
