Jesus has all power Part 2
Jesus has power to forgive sins.
"But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on
earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up
thy bed, and go unto thine house." - Matthew 9:6 KJV
Just as Jesus gave power to His disciples against unclean
spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of disease, Jesus gave power
to His disciples on earth to forgive sins. (Matthew 10:1, Luke 10:17)
Matthew 9:6-8 "But that ye may know that the Son of man
hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,)
Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to
his house. But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God,
which had given such power unto men."
In the great commission found in the gospel of John, Jesus
formally gave His disciples power to remit [forgive] sins.
John 20:21-23 "Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be
unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said
this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: whose
soever sins ye remit [forgive], they are remitted [forgiven] unto them; and
whose soever sins ye retain [withhold forgiveness], they are retained [it is
withheld]."
It is through Jesus’ name that Jesus’ disciples have power
to remit [forgive] sins.
Acts 10:43 "To him give all the prophets witness, that
through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of
sins." Another translation: "He is the one all the prophets testified
about, saying that everyone who believes in him will have their sins forgiven
through his name." [NLT]
Later on in Matthew, after Jesus as the Son of man gave
power unto men to forgive sins, we find the great commission according to
Matthew. We see that Jesus has all power, and that Jesus gives men power
through baptizing. The key, once again, is the power to forgive sins through Jesus’
NAME.
ALL POWER is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go YE
THEREFORE…BAPTIZING them in the NAME of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Ghost… [my emphasis]
Matthew 28:18-20 "And Jesus came and spake unto them,
saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and
teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have
commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.
Amen." (John 5:43, Matthew 1:21, John 14:26).
The great commission found in Luke also emphasizes that repentance
and REMISSION [FORGIVENESS] OF SINS should be preached in HIS NAME. Jesus
commissioned His disciples, giving them the power to forgive sins through His
name in baptism.
Luke 24:46-49 "And said unto them, Thus it is written,
and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And
that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all
nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things. And,
behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of
Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high."
Repentance and remission [forgiveness] of sins in the name
of Jesus was preached in Jerusalem by Apostle Peter after the disciples were
filled with the Holy Ghost. (Acts 1:4-5, 8, Acts 2:4)
Acts 2:38 "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be
baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission
[forgiveness] of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."
