Why go to church?
King David, the shepherd boy and psalmist wrote,
"I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the
house of the LORD." - Psalm 122:1
We go to the house of the Lord to worship, give thanks, and
commune with our Father that created us, loves us, and died for us. This should
be enough reason right here.
"O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my
soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land,
where no water is; to see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in
the sanctuary. Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall
praise thee. Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in
thy name." - Psalm 63:1-4
At church we find the love and mercy of God revealed in the
message of the gospel. Preachers called by God preach the death, burial, and
resurrection of Jesus. They call us to obey the gospel by repentance, baptism
in Jesus name for the remission of sins, and to receive the gift of the Holy
Ghost.
"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye
shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to
your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God
shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save
yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his
word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three
thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and
fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers." - Acts 2:38-42
"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel
which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you,
unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that
which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the
scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day
according to the scriptures:" - 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
"And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it
is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace,
and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel.
For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?" - Romans 10:15-16
"But when they believed Philip preaching the things
concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were
baptized, both men and women." - Acts 8:12
At church we find the care of the Father for His children by
the gifts to the church of the five-fold ministry of apostles, prophets,
evangelists, pastors and teachers that labor among us to help us to grow into
mature saints of God.
"Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the
flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the
church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood." - Acts 20:28
"Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he
led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. ... And he gave some, apostles;
and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for
the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of
the body of Christ:" - Ephesians 4:8, 11-12
"Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every
man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:"
- Colossians 1:28
"But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true
worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father
seeketh such to worship him." - John 4:23
"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish
foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. ... For after
that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by
the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe." - 1 Corinthians
1:18, 21
We go to church to prepare ourselves for the soon coming of
the Lord so that we will be ready to meet Him at His return for His church.
"And let us consider one another to provoke unto love
and to good works: not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the
manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see
the day approaching." - Hebrews 10:24-25
