Why I am baptized in Jesus name - Part 4
I am baptized in Jesus name to obey the gospel.
What exactly is the gospel?
Notice, Paul PREACHED the gospel, they RECEIVED the gospel, they STAND in the gospel, they are SAVED by the gospel!
"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain." - 1 Corinthians 15:1-2 KJV
Next, Paul explains exactly what the gospel is, that Jesus DIED FOR OUR SINS, He was BURIED, and that He ROSE AGAIN THE THIRD DAY. In other words, the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
"For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:" - 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 KJV
Baptism in Jesus name has to do with OBEYING the gospel.
Paul explains how we OBEY Christ’s DEATH, BURIAL, and RESURRECTION.
We OBEY Christ’s DEATH by REPENTANCE. We crucify our sinful carnal nature by repentance. We become dead to sin.
"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?" - Romans 6:1-2 KJV
So what does baptism in Jesus name have to do with the gospel?
We follow Jesus and OBEY His BURIEL when we are BURIED WITH HIM BY BAPTISM IN JESUS NAME.
Our old self/old nature that was sinful and carnal is buried in a watery grave of baptism. ALL our sins are BURIED when we are baptized IN JESUS NAME.
"Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." - Romans 6:3-4 KJV
We OBEY Christ’s RESURRECTION when we are FILLED WITH HIS resurrecting SPIRIT. His Spirit that raised Him up from the dead raises us up from the dead spiritually to walk a new walk with new life in His Spirit.
Our old man of sin is crucified and buried. By obeying the gospel, we have put on Christ, taking His name in baptism, and being filled with His Spirit, the Holy Ghost.
"Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin." - Romans 6:6 KJV
"And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts." - Galatians 5:24 KJV
"For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ." - Galatians 3:27 KJV
What does the Bible say if I do NOT OBEY the GOSPEL? (To obey we turn our back on sin, bury our sin by baptism in Jesus name, and are filled with His Spirit to live a holy and overcoming life in this world).
"For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?" - 1 Peter 4:17 KJV
Paul spoke to the church in Thessalonica. They were enduring great suffering and persecutions.
"Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; and to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
“Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed ) in that day." - 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10 KJV
"But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness." - Romans 6:17-18 KJV
Peter preached this form of doctrine of salvation on the Day of Pentecost for us all to follow today.
"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." - Acts 2:38-39 KJV
