Burying the Old Man of Sin

The “old man” of sin was buried when I was baptized in the name of Jesus

The “old man” is our old sinful nature.

We “put off the old man with his deeds” by crucifying our old sinful nature. We do this by repenting of our sins.  (See: Ephesians 4:20-32).

"Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." - Romans 6:3-4

"Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin." - Romans 6:6

It is not enough to crucify our old man of sin: it

.must also be buried. We bury our old nature when we get baptized in the name of Jesus.

"That ye put off concerning the former conversation  the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness." - Ephesians 4:22-24

"Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:; for which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience.

"In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; and have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:" - Colossians 3:5-10

When we put on the new man, we’ve put on Christ.

"For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ." - Galatians 3:27

We “put on Christ” by taking His name in water baptism, and by being filled with His Spirit, the Holy Ghost.

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." - 2 Corinthians 5:17
