God promised David He would establish the throne of his
kingdom forever.
"And it came to pass that night, that the word of the
LORD came unto Nathan, saying, Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the
LORD…I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels,
and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house [a temple] for my
name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever... And thine house
and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be
established for ever." - 2 Samuel 7:4-5, 12-13, 16 KJV
The first time David is mentioned in the New Testament is in
the first book and the very first verse describing the lineage of Christ:
"The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of
David, the son of Abraham." - Matthew 1:1 KJV
The second time:
"But while he thought on these things, behold, the
angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of
David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in
her is of the Holy Ghost." - Matthew 1:20 KJV
Luke also mentions David and God’s promise to him:
"And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from
God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose
name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary... And
the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt
call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the
Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there
shall be no end." - Luke 1:26-27, 30-33 KJV
