Part 3
First comes the natural, then the spiritual. We see the Law
and customs pointing to Christ.
On Yom Kippur, before the afternoon prayer service, another
custom of the Jews is for all men to receive "lashes." "These symbolic
lashes humble the recipient and remind him to repent."
The lashes that Christ received before He was offered as a
sacrifice of atonement for our sins on the cross were more than symbolic. Jesus
received the cruel and inhuman scourging from the Romans (the “half-way death”)
in our place for OUR sins and for our healing. (Philippians 2:5-11)
"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was
bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and
with his stripes we are healed." - Isaiah 53:5 KJV
"He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who
shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living:
for the transgression of my people was he stricken." - Isaiah 53:8 KJV
The goat that was offered as the sacrifice for the yearly
atonement was to be carried outside of the camp.
"And the bullock for the sin offering, and the goat for
the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy
place, shall one carry forth without the camp; and they shall burn in the fire
their skins, and their flesh, and their dung." - Leviticus 16:27 KJV
"And he bearing his cross went forth into a place
called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: Where they
crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the
midst." - John 19:17-18 KJV
"For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought
into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp.
Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood,
suffered without the gate. Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp,
bearing his reproach." - Hebrews 13:11-13 KJV
The Bible says that the Law (Mosaic) was a shadow of things
to come.
"For the law having a shadow of good things to come,
and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which
they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect."
- Hebrews 10:1 KJV
"But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again
made of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of
goats should take away sins." - Hebrews 10:3-4 KJV
"But Christ being come an high priest of good things to
come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to
say, not of this building; neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his
own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal
redemption for us." - Hebrews 9:11-12 KJV
"By the which will we are sanctified through the
offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." - Hebrews 10:10 KJV
By our repentance and baptism in Jesus name, we claim His
blood that He shed in His death for our sins.
"Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into
Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?" - Romans 6:3 KJV
"Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into
death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the
Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." - Romans 6:4 KJV
"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye
shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38 KJV
