Pentecost Part 12

 Pentecost Part 12

Israel had a marriage covenant with God from Mount Sinai. Their marriage covenant bound Israel to keep the Law of Moses.

God revealed by the prophet Jeremiah that He was bringing Israel a new covenant.

"Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

"Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:

"But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel;

"After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

"And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD:

"For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more." - Jeremiah 31:31-34

But how could Israel be released from her covenant of marriage with God?

"Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

"For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.

"So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man." - Romans 7:1-3

To release Israel from her marriage covenant, God manifested Himself in flesh in the name of Jesus and died.

Israel was now free to marry another.

"Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God." - Romans 7:4

God freed Israel to enter His new covenant.
