The first mention of the early church baptizing is on the Day of Pentecost, Acts chapter two.
Peter preached the gospel, that Jesus died, was buried, and
rose again. (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).
"…Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and
foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and
slain: whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it
was not possible that he should be holden of it…" - Acts 2:23-24 KJV
"Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their
heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren,
what shall we do?
In answer to their question, "What shall we do?"
Peter preached how to obey the gospel.
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every
one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall
receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
“For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to
all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." -
Acts 2:37-39 KJV
Peter preached repentance, baptism in Jesus name, and
receiving the Holy Ghost.
Peter then continued to preach.
"And with many other words did he testify and exhort,
saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation." - Acts 2:40 KJV
"Then they that gladly received his word were baptized:
and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls." -
Acts 2:41 KJV
This first mention of the church baptizing reveals new
converts were baptized the same day after hearing the preaching of the gospel.
To be continued…
