There are some that have the misconception (perhaps from a popular Christian song) that Jesus went from the grave to the sky.

Jesus died, He was buried, and on the third day He was resurrected. Jesus did not ascend to the sky until 40 days after His resurrection. (Acts 1:1-9)

"Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: to whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:" - Acts 1:2-3 KJV

With this misconception, there is an important aspect of the gospel left out.

These forty days were of the utmost importance of the gospel because during these 40 days Jesus witnessed to multitudes of people showing them that He had overcome death and the grave and was alive - forevermore!

"For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: and that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: after that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep [have died]. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles." - 1 Corinthians 15:3-7 KJV

This misconception is important to correct because this time period between Jesus’ resurrection and the day He was taken up in the sky is a very important time period in our obedience to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

We obey the gospel by following Jesus’ death by repentance of our sins, we follow His burial by being buried with Him by baptism in Jesus name, and we follow His resurrection by being filled with His Holy Ghost to live a holy and overcoming life. (1Corinthians 15:1-4, Romans 6:1-11, Colossians 2:11-15).

The next part is so very important. We are to be witnesses, that through Jesus’ death and by the power of His Spirit we have overcome sin and are living a victorious changed life!

This is exactly what Jesus told His disciples at the end of the 40 days after that He had witnessed to so many people His resurrection from the dead. Jesus was a witness of the power of His Spirit, and before He ascended into heaven He let His disciples know - we are to be witnesses! Jesus told them,

"But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight." - Acts 1:8-9 KJV (Luke 24:49-52)

Jesus didn't ascend from the grave and rise straight to heaven. First, He was a witness of His resurrecting power. And we don't ascend into heaven the moment we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost! First, we are witnesses of His resurrecting power!

"Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." - Romans 6:4 KJV

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." - 2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV

"Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:" - Colossians 1:11-12 KJV
