What is the Son of God? Part 1
We are approaching the day that the world celebrates as the birth of the Son of God. What is the Son of God? Who is the Son of God?
Isaiah prophesied of the son of God.
"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
“Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this." - Isaiah 9:6-7 KJV
Isaiah tells us this son has a human birth, yet He is the mighty God, the everlasting Father.
God is a Spirit. (John 4:24) The Son of God is the human temple that the Spirit of God dwells in.
The Son of God was born a baby, filled with the Spirit of God from conception. The Son of God began with conception in the womb. The Son of God became the physical dwelling place of God to walk among His people for the purpose of setting up His kingdom and redeeming humanity from their sins. (John 1:11,14, John 2:19-21, Titus 2:14, John 3:5, John 3:26, see below).
"And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. ...
“And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end." - Luke 1:26-27, 30-33 KJV
Who is the Son of God? JESUS is His name. JESUS is the name of the Spirit of God as well as the body of God. The Spirit of God inhabited a body when He was made flesh and dwelt among humanity. (John 1:1, 14, 1Timothy 3:16)
JESUS – the mighty God, the everlasting Father – would fulfill Isaiah’s prophecy. The Holy Ghost, which is the Spirit of God, would cause conception in the virgin’s womb.
"Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God." - Luke 1:34-35 KJV
Matthew also recorded the birth of the Son of God. “Christ” means “anointed.”
"Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise:
”When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. [Another translation: “Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.” (It appears he assumed she had committed adultery.)]
“But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
“Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. [Isaiah 7:14]
“Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: and knew her not [kept her a virgin] till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS." - Matthew 1:18-25 KJV
