When we worship Jesus, it is not only about praising Him; it
is about sacrifice.
When Abraham and Isaac were headed to Mount Mariah, Abraham
told his servants that they were going to worship.
"And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here
with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to
you." - Genesis 22:5 KJV
God had told Abraham to offer Isaac for a burnt offering. He
was prepared to obey, for he took the wood for the burnt offering.
"And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac,
whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for
a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
“And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his
ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the
wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God
had told him." - Genesis 22:2-3 KJV
When Abraham told his young men he and Isaac were going to
go yonder and worship, Abraham was prepared to kill Isaac.
Isaac allowed Abraham to bind him on an altar, to present
himself a sacrifice to God.
"And they came to the place which God had told him of;
and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac
his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. And Abraham stretched forth
his hand, and took the knife to slay his son." - Genesis 22:9-10 KJV
Abraham’s prophesied, “God will provide HIMSELF a lamb for a
burnt offering.”
"And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a
lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together." - Genesis
22:8 KJV
On that day on Mount Moriah God provided a ram to take the place
of Isaac.
"And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold
behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took
the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son."
- Genesis 22:13 KJV
2000 years later, God in the body of Christ, provided
HIMSELF as a Lamb for an offering to take OUR place.
"The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and
saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." -
John 1:29 KJV
While Jesus was represented by the ram that died in Isaac’s
place, WE are represented by Isaac that was a LIVING sacrifice.
While Isaac offered to give his life as a sacrifice to God,
YET LIVED, we are to offer our life as a sacrifice to God – A LIVING SACRIFICE.
"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of
God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God,
which is your reasonable service." - Romans 12:1 KJV
God, in His love and mercy, provided the ram as a sacrifice
instead of Isaac. And God, in His love and mercy, provided Himself as a
sacrifice instead of us. It is thus our reasonable service to be a living sacrifice
for God.
How do we become a living sacrifice? We become dead to SIN and alive to God.
"Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed
unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord." - Romans 6:11
KJV
We become holy and acceptable by His Spirit working in us.
We repent, are baptized in Jesus name for the remission of
our sins, and receive the Holy Ghost, speaking in tongues as His Spirit gives
the utterance.
"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye
shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38 KJV (Acts 2:4)
Another translation of Romans 12:1 sums up our worship:
"And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to
give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a
living and holy sacrifice--the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the
way to worship him." - Romans 12:1 NLT
