Why go to church?
"And I will give you pastors according to mine heart,
which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding." - Jeremiah 3:15
KJV
As a believer, we need the preaching of the Word to be
saved.
"For after that in the wisdom of God the world by
wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save
them that believe." - 1 Corinthians 1:21 KJV
What kind of preacher can save us?
"For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him
shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek:
for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever
shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call
on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of
whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how
shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the
feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good
things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who
hath believed our report?" - Romans 10:11-16 KJV
As a believer, we needed to hear the gospel from a preacher
sent by God – a preacher that preaches the true gospel that brings peace and reconciliation
between us and God - so that we could obey the gospel and be saved!
When Esaias (Isaiah) said, Who hath believed our report? He proceeded
to prophecy of the gospel - the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Peter
preached this gospel on the Day of Pentecost. When the people asked, What shall
we do? Peter answered them,
"Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name
of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the
Holy Ghost. ... And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying,
Save yourselves from this untoward generation." - Acts 2:38, 40 KJV
"Then they that gladly received his word were baptized:
and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And
they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in
breaking of bread, and in prayers." - Acts 2:41-42 KJV
The Bible says that Jesus gave gifts for the
perfecting of the saints, to preach and teach believers how to grow up in
Christ and become mature Christians.
"And gave gifts ... and he gave some,
apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and
teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for
the edifying of the body of Christ:" - Ephesians 4:8, 11-12 KJV (The word “perfecting”
in this verse means “complete furnishing, equipping”).
Paul exhorted pastors to watch over God’s church and to feed
the believers, saying,
"Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the
flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the
church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood." - Acts 20:28
KJV
The Bible says we must not neglect our meeting together for
church as some people do, but we need to encourage each other, especially now
that the day of Jesus’ return is drawing near!
"Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without
wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) and let us consider one another
to provoke unto love and to good works: not forsaking the assembling of
ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so
much the more, as ye see the day approaching." - Hebrews 10:23-25 KJV
