It is significant that Jesus wore a crown thorns at the
height of his suffering and before his death.
A crown represents Glory. So why a crown of thorns?
Thorns are first mentioned in the scripture when Adam
sinned.
"And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened
unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded
thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in
sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles
shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the
sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for
out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou
return." - Genesis 3:17-19 KJV
Because Adam disobeyed God’s command, the ground was cursed.
In sorrow would he eat of it. It would bring forth thorns and thistles. In the
sweat of his face would he eat bread, till he would return to the ground. For
out of the ground was he made and would return.
"And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it
on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, ... Then came Jesus forth,
wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them,
Behold the man!" - John 19:2, 5 KJV
"For as by one man's disobedience many were made
sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous." -
Romans 5:19 KJV
"Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup
[of suffering] from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. ... And
being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great
drops of blood falling down to the ground." - Luke 22:42, 44 KJV
Christ, second man Adam, was cursed for us.
"Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law,
being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth
on a tree [cross]:" - Galatians 3:13 KJV
"For since by man came death, by man came also the
resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all
be made alive. ... And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living
soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit." - 1 Corinthians
15:21-22, 45 KJV
In His obedience, Jesus became cursed for our disobedience. He
was a man of sorrows.
"He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows,
and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was
despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried
our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and
afflicted." - Isaiah 53:3-4 KJV
The thorns of pain, suffering, and death upon His head was His
crown of glory and honour, for it brought us as sons unto glory.
"But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the
angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by
the grace of God should taste death for every man. For it became him, for whom
are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory,
to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings." -
Hebrews 2:9-10 KJV
"What we do see is Jesus, who was given a position
"a little lower than the angels"; and because he suffered death for
us, he is now "crowned with glory and honor." Yes, by God's grace,
Jesus tasted death for everyone." - Hebrews 2:9 NLT
Those that love and obey Jesus (Acts 2:38), enduring temptation, trials,
suffering, and tribulation, will be given a crown of life, a crown of glory.
"Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when
he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised
to them that love him." - James 1:12 KJV
"And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall
receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away." - 1 Peter 5:4 KJV
"Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer:
behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and
ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will
give thee a crown of life." - Revelation 2:10 KJV
"And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also:
knowing that tribulation worketh patience;" - Romans 5:3 KJV
The thorn brings pain and suffering, but we glory in our
infirmities [weaknesses], taking pleasure in them, in reproaches [insults],
necessities [hardships], persecutions, and distresses [troubles] for Christ’s
sake.
"And lest I should be exalted above measure through the
abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the
messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For
this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for
my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather
glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I
take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions,
in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong." -
2 Corinthians 12:7-10 KJV
