The Dedication part 2
Jesus is the Light of the world
Simeon spoke of Jesus when He was a baby,
"A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy
people Israel." - Luke 2:32 KJV (NLT: He is a light to reveal God to the
nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel!")
Jesus said, "I am the light of the world: he that
followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of
life." - John 8:12 KJV
The Bible speaks of Jesus being in Jerusalem at the time of
Hanukkah, which the Bible calls “the feast of the dedication.” (John 10:22
KJV/NLT)
Hanukkah is also known today as the Festival of Lights.
There is much of Hanukkah that is symbolic of Christ and of
the New Covenant.
The eight holders for the Hanukkah lights are for oil
(preferably) or candles, just as the lights that were in the temple were fueled
by pure olive oil, symbolic of God’s Holy Spirit. They are lit during the eight
nights of Hanukkah.
The Hanukkah menorah has eight holders for oil or candles,
plus an additional holder, set apart from the rest, for the Shamash, or “servant”
candle. Each light of the menorah is ignited by the Shamash, or servant candle.
It appears that Jesus represents this light.
To be kosher, the Shamash must be offset on a higher or
lower plane than the main eight candles or oil lamps. Jesus revealed Himself to
His disciples as a servant, while He is Almighty God that revealed Himself in
flesh.
"He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments;
and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason,
and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel
wherewith he was girded. ... Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my
feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. ... If
I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one
another's feet." - John 13:4-5, 8, 14 KJV
"But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him
the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:" - Philippians
2:7 KJV
God came in the form of man to redeem man from sin so that
He could pour out His Spirit on all flesh.
"And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel,
and that I am the LORD your God, and none else: and my people shall never be
ashamed. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit
upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men
shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: and also upon the
servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit."
- Joel 2:27-29 KJV
The Light of the world would pour out His Holy Spirit on all
flesh, so that they could be light in the Lord.
"For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light
in the Lord: walk as children of light:" - Ephesians 5:8 KJV
