The “Great Commission” is not only found in Matthew, but also in Mark, Luke, and John.
The elements of the great commission is Christ’s sending forth of His disciples into the world with the gospel, the message of repentance, baptism in Jesus name for the remission (forgiveness) of sins, and the infilling of His Spirit, the Holy Ghost.
Matthew records:
"And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen." - Matthew 28:18-20 KJV
Here Jesus sends forth His disciples to teach all nations. Jesus told them, “I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." (Matthew 9:13) He commanded them to baptize in the NAME. This name is JESUS. He gave the promise that He would be with them always. He would be with them by His Spirit, the Holy Ghost.
Mark records:
"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." - Mark 16:15-18 KJV
Here Jesus sends forth His disciples into all the world to preach the gospel. When a person truly believes in Jesus, there is a response and a turning to Him in obedience. We are saved by baptism of water and of the Spirit. (John 3:5, Acts 2:38)
Luke records:
"And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high." - Luke 24:46-49 KJV
The sending forth of His disciples comes when they are endued with power from on high. As Luke writes in Acts 1:8 "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth." Jesus speaks in Luke 24:46-49 of repentance and remission of sins. Remission of sins is by the name of Jesus (Acts 2:38) as Jesus quotes here, “in his name” beginning in Jerusalem. The first gospel message was preached by Peter in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost. "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38 KJV On that day, they were all “endued with power from on high.” "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." - Acts 2:4 KJV
John records:
"Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained." - John 20:21-23 KJV
Here Jesus sends forth His disciples, “as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.” He foretold of receiving the Holy Ghost, linking His breath with receiving His Spirit.
The Greek word here for “breathed” has in view the Greek word for breath. The Greek word for “breath” is also translated to “Spirit” and to “wind.” "The wind[G4151] bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.[G4151]" - John 3:8 KJV "And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting." - Acts 2:2 KJV "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost,[G4151] and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit[G4151] gave them utterance." - Acts 2:4 KJV
Jesus also spoke of water baptism in Jesus name when He said, “whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.” Jesus gave His disciples power to remit/forgive sins, which we find is through water baptism in Jesus name.
"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." - Acts 2:38 KJV
